BNP observed the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ on Friday in a befitting manner across the country, marking the civil-military ‘uprising’ on November 7, 1975.
Different other political parties and socio-cultural organisations also observed the day from different historical perspectives.
On November 7 in 1975, amid political turmoil, soldiers and civilians jointly freed then chief of army staff Ziaur Rahman from the captivity at Dhaka Cantonment, paving the way for Zia to come to power.
BNP and its associate bodies chalked out a 10-day programme to observe the day.
As part of the programmes, party flags were hoisted at the party’s Nayapaltan central office, chairperson’s Gulshan office and all other offices all over the country in the early morning.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia paid homage to the party’s founder, late President Ziaur Rahman, marking the day.
Khaleda, also a former Prime Minister, flanked by party leaders and activists, went to the grave of her husband at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar around 11 am and placed a wreath at his mazar in observance of the day.
She offered fateha there and also joined a munajat with the party leaders and workers, seeking divine blessings for eternal peace of the departed soul of Ziaur Rahman.
Besides, BNP’s all units and associate bodies also observed the day across the country with due respect amid various programmes.
The party is also scheduled to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city on Saturday on the occasion. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will address the rally as the chief guest.
While BNP and its alliance marked the day as the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, the ruling Awami League and its front organisations observed it as the day of ‘killing of freedom-fighter solders’.
A rally was arranged in front of Awami League’s Bangabandhu Avenue office on the occasion.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal also observed the occasion as “Civil-Military Revolution Day”.
