The national standing committee of the BNP at a meeting Sunday night decided to join in the upcoming budget session of the parliament though the date of its joining was not fixed. Many standing committee members of the party questioned the sincerity of the government regarding its dialogue proposal, however, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia said if the government made any formal offer her party would take part in the dialogue.
The committee also decided that the party would raise the non-party caretaker government issue by taking part in the upcoming parliament session.
The meeting which was convened to take a stock of the current political situation of the country, noted that the way, the party had extended its support to Hefazat-e-Islami Bangladesh (HIB) during its Dhaka seize programme was not proper, a standing committee member told The Independent seeking anonymity.
“Though BNP does not agree with the 13-point demand of HIB, which was not communicated to the people properly. BNP backed HIB which went on its movement for ensuring punishment for the atheists who made indecent remarks against our prophet and Islam
but many people thought that BNP endorsed all the 13-point of the HIB due to lack of proper communication,” said a standing committee member who took part in the meeting.
Many members of the committee opined that BNP should take a lesson from this incident and reshape its political strategy, the sources said adding BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia who chaired the meeting also endorsed this view.
The meeting was told that BNP high commend could not gauge the organisational strength and leadership quality of the HIB and they were not sure how their rally would be end, the sources said.
Earlier, the national standing committee of BNP held the meeting at the party chief’s Gulshan office to discuss various issues, including the latest political situation, and work out the next course of action.
BNP leaders Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar, Tariqul Islam, ASM Hannan Shah and Mirza Abbas and others took part in the meeting.
