Before ending the 24 hours ultimatum of the Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam to the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to withdraw her comment, the BNP on Wednesday said there was nothing tantamount to seditious in Khaleda’s speech.

“Syed Ashraf resorted to falsehood. In Khaleda Zia’s speech nothing was tantamount to seditious. Ashraf did not tell the truth. We do not know in which condition he talks to the media. He told lie to mislead the people,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of the party, told journalists at a press briefing at party’s Nayapaltan headquarters in the capital.

Fakhrul, after a long day pause, briefed the media at party office where many hideout leaders were present.

On Tuesday, Syed Ashraf has given a 24 hour ultimatum to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for withdrawing her Monday’s statement that “affected the credibility” of country’s law enforcers.

LGRD Minister and also Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said: “Khaleda delivered a similar speech on our law enforcer’s crackdown on Satkhira Jamaat-Shibir members that the daily Inqilab carried in its report. The newspaper authority has apologised for its false report. However, Khaleda did not do so.”

“She has to withdraw her instigative statement immediately, otherwise, the government would take necessary steps,” he warned.

On Monday’s rally, Khaleda Zia said: “It is difficult to believe that our law enforcers have conducted such violent drives against their own countrymen.” She hinted the involvement of outsiders with the joint forces operation in Satkhira district.

Fakhrul alleged that the government has made all sorts of arrangements to destroy the democracy of the country.

The spokesperson of the party alleged that the ruling party was moving forward with a plan to eradicate the opposition party bringing allegations of violence against the party men.

Fakhrul alleged extrajudicial killings have been increasing day by day. He cited: “10 bodies were found in last 10 days. 187 leaders and activists were disappeared and 227 killed in last three months. Three bodies were found in Nilphamari who were accused of attack on Asaduzzaman Noor’s motorcade.”

Demanding neutral investigation into these incidents, Fakhrul urged the right bodies to come forward for investigating into those incidents.

“It happens when there is no rule of law in the country. People having differences in opinion were killed in this way which is a threat to the democracy,” Fakhrul said.

The BNP leader claimed that the real democracy is dead and the funeral procession of democracy has been started from January 5.

In the briefing, party’s standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, joint secretary general Amanullah Aman, Mizanur Rahman, member secretary of Dhaka city unit BNP Abdus Salam were present.
