Police have detained BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy from Gulshan area in Dhaka, according to BNP.

He was picked up around 9:30pm yesterday while he was returning home following a meeting at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office, said the party’s press wing staff, Shamsuddin Didar.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah confirmed that Gayeshwar was arrested on “specific” charges.

His detention came hours after the party’s activists and leaders attacked law enforcement officials and snatched two of their peers from police custody near the High Court when Khaleda appeared before a special court in Bakshibazar area for the ongoing trial of the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

They also broke two police rifles when law enforcement officials tried to resist the demonstrators, according to police.

“Seven members of police were injured in the attack by leaders and activists of BNP. The incident was broadcast throughout the day,” Asaduzzaman said.

“We have specific evidence on Gayeshwar Chandra’s involvement in the incident.”

Referring to a similar attack on policemen reportedly by BNP activists in Rajshahi in 2014, the DMP official said the objective of such attacks on law enforcers was to create panic among people and destabilize the country.

On Sunday, Gayeshwar, a member of the BNP’s policy-making body, warned that their party would go on an outright movement to oust the government if party chief Khaleda was “unlawfully” convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, the verdict in which is scheduled to be delivered on February 8.

“Do you (government) think we’ll only shed tears if you send Khaleda Zia to jail? We won’t cry. Rather, we’ll ensure your fall before her release,” he said while addressing a discussion at National Press Club.
