A BNP leader, who was in jail custody in a case over vandalism, passed away at Dhaka Medical College Hospital this afternoon.
Abu Bashar, 36, joint secretary of ward-19 BNP, was declared dead after being brought to DMCH from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj around 2:30pm, said family members and police.
Bashar’s family alleged that he was arrested by police on July 26 from in front of a hospital in the capital, two days before a BNP rally in Nayapaltan.
Bachchu Mia, in-charge at the DMCH police outpost, said Bashar was taken to the hospital following a prison doctor’s advice.
“The body has been kept at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy,” he added.
Speaking to The Daily Star, Mahmudul Hasan Shuvo, chief medical officer of Dhaka Central Jail, said, “Abu Bashar was given primary treatment at the jail hospital at 12:15pm for chest pain. As his health did not improve, he was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.”
The BNP leader might have died from a heart attack, he added.
Bashar’s brother Shah Alam said he was the general secretary of BNP’s Malibagh unit and used to run a tea stall in Malibagh Bazar area.
“Ramna police arrested my brother in a case over vandalism. But he was not involved in any such incidents. He was framed in the case,” he added.
