BNP leader Manju alleges that the police are threatening to detain BNP members and their relatives

BNP’s Organizing Secretary and Khulna metropolitan unit President Nazrul Islam Manju alleges that polling offices are starting to appear vacant as supporters fear detention by police and the Detective Branch (DB).

He made the accusations at a press briefing, held at the local BNP office, around 11:30am on Friday.

Manju also serves as coordinator of the Khulna metropolitan unit of Jatiya Oikya Front.

“The police are threatening to detain BNP leaders, activists, and even their relatives. Police and local ruling party leaders have taken control of everything related to the election. Female activists are being told to leave polling areas,” Manju alleged.

The BNP leader continued: “The army has been tasked with ensuring a fair and inclusive election, not to have leisure time. They [the Bangladesh Army] should make an effort to ease the voters’ concerns about security and ensure a proper voting atmosphere.

“The army should supervise every polling centre across the country.”

Alleging that Awami League candidates are campaigning even after the deadline, Manju accused ruling party candidates’ supporters of using motorbikes to parade around the city.

Speaking at the press briefing, Manju further alleged: “We are feeling insecure and helpless. Bail of BNP leaders and activists is being cancelled and the individuals are being arrested again.

“Many leaders, such as: JSD city President Lokman Hakim, Councillor Hafizur Rahman, Mizanur Rahman, Shafiqul Islam and Abdul Quader, have been arrested by the police.”

He urged the Bangladesh Army to stand guard to ensure voting rights of the public in the 11th parliamentary election slated for December 30.
