BNP fears rigging in GCC polls

Main opposition BNP has termed ‘dubious’ the decision of the election officials concerned to announce the result of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls on Sunday, a day after the polling, and apprehended there might be rigging.

“We’ve come to know that the returning officer of the Gazipur City Corporation polls had said results of the election will be formally announced on Sunday morning. We apprehend there might be rigging if the result is announced on Sunday. The decision smacks of ill-intention,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

The BNP leader came up with the remark at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Friday.

He said the BNP has sent a letter to the Election Commission expressing concern over the issue. “We hope, they (election officials) will consider the matter.”

Rizvi reiterated the party demand for the deployment of army in the GCC polls for the sake of holding free and fair election.

He expressed the hope that the maiden polls to GCC will be free and fair, and urged the EC to take stern action against those violating electoral code of conduct in the GCC polls.
