BNP defends Tarique’s remarks against Bangabandhu

Defending party senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman’s recent remarks against Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, BNP on Tuesday asked the Awami League to come up with evidence if there is any mistake in the BNP leader’s assertions.

“Tarique Rahman’s recent statement in London was based on facts, documents and historical evidence. He has dug out those from different books and newspapers. You (AL leaders) come up with proof and facts if there’s anything wrong in his assertions,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He was addressing a meeting arranged at the Jatiya Press Club by BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal protesting the ‘continuous falsehood’ against Tarique Rahman.

After making a surprise claim that Ziaur Rahman was Bangladesh’s first president, Tarique last week also came up with another assertion that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was an ‘illegal’ prime minister.

Addressing a function, organised by the BNP at the Westminster Hall in London last week, he claimed that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the “first illegal prime minister of Bangladesh” as he had apparently ignored the declaration of independence made on Apr 10, 1971, when the first government in exile was formed.

Tarique presented some references in favour of his claim.

The senior BNP leader’s statement drew flak from the ruling party leaders, and even some of them advised him to undergo mental treatment.

Criticising the Awami League leaders for making ‘indecent remarks’ against the BNP senior vice chairman, Fakhrul said the language the ruling party leaders are using countering Tarique’s remarks has exposed that the party has become politically bankrupt.

The BNP spokesman said it is not new that Awami League is carrying out falsehood and propaganda against Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman. “They’re doing this as they got isolated from people and took position against the country and its people.”

Fakhrul said their party does not want to provoke any controversy over the Liberation War as the country’s people know it very well that who had fought in the battle field in 1971 and who stayed at Theatre Road in Kolkata.

Mentioning that the country is passing through a critical time, the BNP leader urged that Chhatra Dal leaders to play a vital role in saving the country’s existence and overcoming the current crisis.

  1. While the AL top leaders were drinking and visiting brothels in Calcutta, Ziaur Rahman was fighting for the creation of Bangladesh. Today, Hasina has the audacity to say that Zia was working against Bangladesh. Where was she when the war was being fought.
