BNP chief Khaleda charged in court in four more cases over 2015 blockade violence

Now Khaleda is charged in court in altogether 11 such cases which, the BNP leaders are alleging, aim to keep her away from politics.

The investigating officers submitted the four new chargesheets in the cases with Darussalam Police Station to Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Khaleda is named as “instigator” and “absconding” in all four chargesheets.

Earlier, the former prime minister was charged in court in five cases started at Darussalam Police Station and two at Jatrabarhi Police Station.

A Dhaka court set Jul 28 to frame charges against Khaleda and 37 others in one of the Jatrabarhi cases.

Sanaullah Miah, a lawyer for Khaleda, told bdnews24.com after the filing of the four new chargesheets: “It’s ignominious and shameful for a nation to make chargesheets one after another on false chargese against a former prime minister.”

The investigators named 104 other persons in the chargesheets.

They include Khaleda’s Press Secretary Maruf Kamal Khan, BNP leaders Amanullah Aman, Habibunnabi Khan Sohel, Mir Sharafat Ali Safu, Saiful Alam Nirob, Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papiya and Sultan Salauddin Tuku.

Court police official Jahangir Hossain told bdnews24.com the lists of accused in the cases were almost same.

He said the court fixed Jul 17 for the presentation of the cases.

The cases with Darussalam Police Station had been filed over damaging vehicles and bombing.

The BNP chief in January last year called a nonstop countrywide transport blockade that continued for three months.

At least 120 persons died in violence during the blockade. Most of them were burnt alive in firebombing of buses.
