bKash listed among 50 companies that are changing the world

Fortune magazine’s, in its annual list of companies that are changing the world for the better, has listed bKash – a Bangladeshi mobile-based payment system.

The list, titled ‘Change the World 2017’, includes 50 private companies whose services and products are having a positive impact on people’s lives.

bKash, currently in it’s sixth year of operation, has helped hundreds of thousands of people use financial services like a bank, albeit with much less hassle. bKash users can deposit money, and easily transfer it with the aid of licensed bKash agents around the country. The mobile financial service has also doubled as a payment medium for many services, further surpassing its perceived usage.

Market assessment by Fortune noted that 22% of Bangladeshi adults use bKash with roughly 4.5 million transactions happening on a daily basis.

The innovative nature and widespread usage of bKash has bagged many accolades over the years. The inclusion in the Fortune Change the World 2017 is just the latest. The list is topped by banking giant JP Morgan Chase and followed by DSM – a Dutch company which aims to reduce methane emissions from cows – and Apple.

It should be noted that most of the entries in the list are global or regional ventures. Among them, bKash stands out with its operations in Bangladesh alone.
