National flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines will soon resume its halted flights on the Barisal-Dhaka-Barisal route, says Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon.

The minister made the statement while visiting Barisal Airport on Sunday.

He said: “Barisal Airport is the gateway of the southern region having unlimited opportunities for expanding the tourism industry.

Bangladesh Biman will soon re-launch its flights on Barisal-Dhaka-Barisal route,” he added.

While exchanging his view with the civil society members and journalists, Menon said: “The airport will be expanded, developed and modernised in order to expand the tourism industry in the area. It will also be made an important part of disaster management in this disaster-prone region.”

Among others, Advocate Talukdar Md Yunus, Advocate Sheikh Md Tipu Sultan, AL Lawmaker Shawkat Hossain Hiron, Editor of the daily Samakal Golam Sarwar, historian Sirajuddin Ahmed and Deputy Commissioner of the district Shohidul Alamwere were present in the view exchange.

Bangladesh Biman had stopped its Dhaka-Barisal-Dhaka flights in November, 2005.

The Airport was turned into an abandoned cattle-grazing field in the absence of flight operations.

Later, United Airways started its domestic flights on the route on April 25, 2013.
