The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been put on high alert along Bangladesh-Myanmar border as Myanmar authorities have reportedly deployed army at its outposts.
“We’ve information the Myanmar authorities mobilised their army at their outposts along the border. We’ve already sent a protest note (to Myanmar authorities) in this regard,” BGB Director General (DG) Major Gen Aziz Ahmed told a press conference.
In the protest note, the BGB chief said they specifically asked the Myanmar authorities to pull out their army from the border.
“We’ve also reinforced our border guards at outposts and asked the BGB members to stay on alert so that they can take necessary steps any time,” he said.
In the wake of growing tension along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border over the killing of BGB Nayek Mizanur Rahman in firing by Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP), Aziz held the press conference at the BGB’s Pilkhana Headquarters.
The BGB chief confirmed that the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) on Saturday handed over the body of Mizan at a flag meeting in Panchhari in Bandarban.
Aziz said another flag meeting at the commander level of BGB and BGP will be held on June 3 to defuse the tension along the border.
He said though they are maintaining good ties with Border Security Force (BSF), they still cannot develop good relations with BGP. “We’re trying to develop our ties with the Myanmar border force.”
Aziz said the first-ever DG-level meeting between the BGB and BGP will be held on June 10 in Myanmar.
He said issues like Mizan’s killing and border problems will be high on agenda at the meeting.
Mizan went missing amid indiscriminate firing by the BGP members along the Naikhonchhari border on Wednesday morning.
Later, a BGP officer confirmed that a member of the Border Guard Bangladesh was killed by his unit on Wednesday when a clash broke out between the two sides amid rising tension along the border.
