BD’s envoy to Kenya attacked at his residence

Nairobi

Bangladesh High Commissioner to Kenya M Wahidur Rahman came under attack by ‘masked muggers’ at his Nairobi’s Karen residence on Saturday night, said an official here on Sunday.

Though the Bangladesh envoy and his family members were unhurt, they are ‘psychologically traumatized’, Shameem Ahsan, the DG of the External Publicity Wing at the Foreign Ministry, told UNB over phone.

He said the High Commissioner was robbed of cash and other electronic items. “Police have taken up the matter and an investigation in this regard is on.”

However, the Kenyan media reports claimed that the High Commissioner was ‘slightly injured’ during the incident that occurred at about 10pm (Kenyan Time).

Nairobi CID boss Nicholas Kamwende told the Kenyan media that they are holding a house help and guards who were on duty at the time of the incident to be sure if they had prior information but have not arrested the prime suspects.

The thugs are reported to have stole Sh170,000, a television set and other items from the High Commissioner’s residence, according to Kenyan police.

Kamwende said the guards will be required to explain how the gang of six gained entrance into the tightly guarded compound ‘as early as 10pm without their knowledge.’

Police say they are increasingly concerned about the high rate of burglaries in Karen area after Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo was also attacked at his home last week.
