BCL factional clash leaves 67 hurt at JU
At least 67 people, including three teachers and a journalist, were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Wednesday, reports UNB.
Witnesses said BCL activists of Mowlana Bhashani Hall and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall locked into an altercation over a trivial matter while taking food at a shop at Battola on the campus.
Later, both the groups, equipped with local sharp weapons, engaged in a clash around 2:00pm.
Chases and counter-chases took place till 5:30pm amid gunshots, leaving 67 people injured.
Finally, police rushed in and took the situation under control.
Three teachers — Mehedi Iqbal of geography and environment department, Mohibur Rouf Soibal of drama department and Habibur Rahman of statistics department — sustained injuries while trying to calm the agitation.
Of the injured, 30 were taken to Enam Medical College Hospital while the rest took treatment at the university medical centre.
JU proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan said the clash took place over a trivial matter and police brought the situation under control.
Additional police have been deployed on the campus to fend off further trouble, he said.
