Hours after the suspension of bus service, launch services from Barisal to Dhaka have been suspended since Friday evening.
The passengers of four triple-deck launches at Barisal river port were asked to leave the vessels by law enforcing agencies around 6:30pm, reports our correspondent.
Md Selim, supervisor of Parabat launch fleet, said: “Officials of law enforcing agencies ordered us to suspend operations and forced passengers on board to leave the vessels.”
“Higher authority asked the captain of the BIWTA operated Dhaka-bound rocket steamer, which left the port at 6:30pm, not to proceed to Dhaka and anchor at Chandpur station, Gopal Chandra Majumdar, assistant general manager BIWTC Barisal station, said.
Same reports were received from Patuakhali, Kuakata, Jhalakathi, Bhandaria, Bhola and other river ports of the region.
However, the launch owners association, port authorities, law enforcing agencies did not disclose any explanations and denied to make any comment about imposing restrictions against the Dhaka-bound water transports operation.
Bus services from Barisal to Dhaka remained suspended since Friday morning following BNP’s December 29 programme.
Aftab Hossain, president of city Sramik League and Barisal Bus Owners Association, said operation of Dhaka-bound passenger buses from Barisal and other parts of the region have been suspended from 11:30am Friday.
He explained that fearing the loss of properties and lives by sabotage ahead of BNP’s ‘March for Democracy’ programme scheduled for December 29, they decided to stop operation of Dhaka-bound bus services until further notice.

The opposition parties’ blockade and ‘hartaal’ was detested and castigated by the business community but now we have to see how the govt’s,or better say the ruling party’s, blockade is taken by the same business community. The ruling party boss and her trumpets were bragging that none would come out to respond to BNP chairperson’s call for ‘march for democracy’; but now why are they blocking the incoming people from coming to Dhaka by stopping trains, buses and launches? Hon’ble PM says Begum Zia always tells lies; but now what common people will say? Does she speak the truth? Ridiculous!
