Bangladesh sees slight rise in Q1 exports

Bangladesh’s export earning in the first quarter of the current 2014-15 fiscal year (July 2014-June 2015) grew a meager 0.88 percent year on year to 7.70 billion U.S. dollars, official data showed Monday.

Of total earnings, Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data showed, the Bangladesh’s income from ready-made garment items including knitwear and woven stood at 6.23 billion U.S. dollars during July-September period of the current fiscal year.

In the first quarter of the current 2014-15 year, the EPB data showed, knitwear garment export growth dipped 3.49 percent to 3, 270.46 million dollars while woven garments plunged 2.66 percent to 2,962.71 million dollars, comparing with the same period of last fiscal year.

Following poor performance of the major ready-made garment export sector, the EPB data showed export income for the last month was 2,552.86 million U.S. dollars, 37.31 million U.S. dollars lower than that in the same month a year ago.

As demand for garment products further soared on Soccer World Cup 2014 in Brazil, Bangladesh grossed the highest ever yearly export income in the immediate past 2013-14 (July 2012-June 2013) fiscal year.

Export income in the 2013-14 fiscal year grew 11.65 percent year on year to exceed 30 billion U. S. dollars for the first time.
