Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah scored half-centuries to help their side post 247 all out in 46.1 overs before the host scored 251/8 in 48.1 overs
Bangladesh made a losing start in their New Zealand tour as they lost their first practice one-day match against a New Zealand XI by two wickets at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln Sunday.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah scored half-centuries to help their side post 247 all out in 46.1 overs before the host scored 251/8 in 48.1 overs.
Bangladesh’s regular captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza did not feature in the match and their other senior player Shakib al Hasan has been ruled out for a few weeks following his injury in the final of the BPL.
With their absence, young Mehedi Hasan Miraz did the captaincy and it was expected that in the absence of another senior batsman Tamim Iqbal, who was supposed to join them Sunday after a scintillating 141-run knock in the BPL final, the other top-order batsmen would utilise the opportunity to acclimatise.
But Mominul Haque, who is not a regular member of the Tigers’ ODI setup, squandered the opportunity as he got out for six after opening the batting.
His opening partner Liton Das also got out two balls later for just three runs to leave the side on 12/2 in 3.2 overs.
Soumya Sarkar, who has had a poor BPL recently, also failed to impress as he made just one run off nine balls before getting dismissed.
Mohammad Mithun followed suit and went back to the pavilion adding just one run when Bangladesh were reeling on 31/4.
But two of the Tigers’ most dependable batsmen Mushfiq and Mahmudullah joined hands to form an innings-saving 108-run stand before the former got out for 62 off 61 balls.
Mahmudullah, who made 72 runs off 88 balls, got a good partner in Sabbir Rahman and the pair added 39 to keep the scoreboard ticking along.
Sabbir got out for 40 in the 42nd over and though Nayeem Hasan remained not out on 17 batting at No 9, he ran out of partners as the side failed to play the full quota of 50 overs.
Right-arm seamer Ian McPeake was the pick of the bowlers for the host with figure of 4/38.
In reply, New Zealand XI were off to a brilliant start as captain Jeet Raval and Andrew Fletcher stitched together a 122-run opening stand in 22 overs before the skipper was caught by wicket-keeper Mushfiq off a Nayeem delivery for 52.
But Fletcher kept on going and hit a brilliant 92 off 112 balls.
Mustafizur Rahman trapped him in front in the first ball of the 36th over before Soumya cleaned up Rachin Ravindra for 17 to reduce the opponent to 188/4.
Finn Allen, who made 30, and Katene Clarke (19) formed a crucial 39-run partnership at that stage and though the visitor grabbed four wickets in quick succession, it was too late for their cause.
Mustafizur, Miraz and Mahmudullah each got two wickets conceding 33, 46 and 37 respectively, while Nayeem and Soumya bagged one apiece.
The Tigers will play their first ODI of the three-match series in Napier Wednesday.
