The United States will honour Bangladeshi journalist Nadia Sharmeen, who was attacked by Hifazat-e Islam supporters in Dhaka.
The US Department of State will hand over on Thursday the ‘2015 International Women of Courage Award’ to 10 women from as many countries in Washington for their bravery.
Sharmeen was attacked on May 5, 2013 while on duty during Hifazat’s Dhaka siege. She was then working for Ekushey TV.
Chittagong-based Hifazat had demanded revocation of Bangladesh’s women policy, among other things.
The Ekushey TV authorities denied sending her on assignment and did not cover her medical expenses and eventually forced her to resign.
Sharmeen now works as a crimes reporter with another TV station and has been a staunch women rights advocate.
The Department of State introduced the award in 2007 to recognise the exceptional courage and leadership of women around the world.
The recipients will meet several important figures including First Lady Michelle Obama and participate in various programmes.
