Bangladesh: BNP strike enters second day

The nationwide two-day general strike called by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party opposition alliance entered its second day as incidents of violence were reported from different corners of the country on Tuesday.

Khaleda Zia’s BNP-led oppostion has called the strike in demand of the release of 154 BNP leaders and activists who were detained during police raid at the party’s headquarters at Nayapaltan last week.

In Dhaka, violence was reported from several parts of the city including Azimpur, Mirpur, Motijheel, Panthapath, Farmgate, Shyamoli, Banasree and Old Dhaka.

Miscreants exploded cocktails in Motijheel, Farmgate, Mirpur Stadium and Jatrabari.

According to reports, five crude bombs exploded on Dhaka University campus.

“Miscreants exploded at least five crude bombs on the Dhaka University campus on Tuesday as sporadic violence continued on the second day of the opposition alliance-enforced countrywide shutdown,” bdnews24.com reported.

Incidents of violence were reported from several districts of the country including Natore and Chittagong.

In Tangail, BCL leader Imran Sarker was killed during clashes betweebetween Awami League and BNP supporters, reports said.

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) is the student front of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League.

At least 25 people were injured in Rajshahi district as hartal supporters clashed with the police on Tuesday.

Strike supporters put barricade on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chittagong distirct on the same day.

Recently, Bangladesh witnessed massive violence after Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee was sentenced to death by a tribunal for several crimes like mass killings, torture, rape and looting and forcible religious conversion during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 when the country attained freedom from Pakistan after a bloody struggle that left countless dead and thousands of women outraged.
