The Supreme Court has upheld the ban imposed on using tannery waste for fish and poultry feed.
In 2011, the High Court ordered shutting down all feed factories using wastes of tanneries at Dhaka’s Hazaribagh within a month.
On Sunday, the appeals bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha scrapped the trade body’s appeal for reconsidering the petition.
The matter was first brought before the High Court in a writ by Human Rights and peace for Bangladesh. Lawyer Manzil Morshed represented the group during the appeal hearing.
“As the court has upheld the ban, there are no longer any legal hurdle to close down these factories.”
On Jul 21, 2011 the High Court ordered stopping tannery waste being used as feed for chicken, fish and ducks, after hearing the petition from the human rights and environmental organisation.
The court had also ordered legal proceedings against producers of such feed and pitched for a policy to regulate tannery waste.
