State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku on Sunday said the ban by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on holding rallies and public meetings in the capital is a logical decision as BNP is creating anarchy in the country in the name of politics.
“The police have taken the decision considering the security of public life and property… It’s not a permanent ban. The police will lift the ban when they feel the situation is good,” Tuku told reporters at his Secretariat office.
The junior minister criticised BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka as he urged BNP leaders and workers to join their October 25 rally with machetes and axes. “Such remarks aren’t expected from any politician.”
Replying to a query how the decision of banning rallies and public meetings is democratic, Tuku said BNP chief Khaleda Zia has been threatening to paralyse the country. “She (Khaleda) and other BNP leaders have been issuing various threats to topple the government. Under the circumstances, it’s the duty of the law enforcing agencies to save public life and property.”
The DMP imposed an indefinite ban on holding any kind of rally and bringing out procession in the capital from Sunday 6 am.
The ban came as the ruling and opposition alliances called their respective meetings in the city for October 25 in an apparent bid to stage big showdowns at the fag end of the current regime’s tenure.
Earlier, on October 14, Sadeque Hossain Khoka urged BNP leaders to get ready with machetes and axes to resist any possible attacks on the October 25 rally.
