B Chy deplores jailing of BNP leaders

Badruddoza-Chow

President of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) Prof AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Monday denounced the jailing of senior BNP leaders, saying it is devoid of political etiquette.

“This is not the right attitude to send the senior leaders of BNP, including its acting secretary general. This is not a good sign for democracy,” he said.

The BDB chief was talking to reports after visiting the family members of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at their Uttara residence.

A Dhaka court sent BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas and its Dhaka City member secretary Abdus Salam to jail rejecting their bail petitions in three cases, including that of a murder, in connection with an arson attack on a bus.

Deploring the jailing of the senior BNP leaders, B Chowdhury said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas are not the type of people to flee. “I don’t like sending senior leaders to jail. They could be quizzed outside, if necessary, instead of imprisoning them.”

He also said the BNP leaders should be allowed to exercise their democratic rights on the streets for the sake of democracy.

The BDB chief, also the founding sectary general of BNP, went to Fakhrul’s residence around 5pm, talked to his wife Rahat Ara Begum and consoled the family members.
