Owners on Saturday decided to keep closed more than 300 garment factories in Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital, due to the labour unrest.
Around 8:00am Sunday, thousands of workers gathered in front of Jamgara and started demonstration on the Ashulia-Baipail road protesting the owners’ decision to shutdown the factories.
Police first urged the workers to clear the road through a microphone as the gathering was creating problem for vehicular movement.
As the workers continued their agitation ignoring police request, the law enforcers resisted them from assembling at Jamgara triggering a clash.
At one stage, they vandalised at least five vehicles on the road.
Police had to fire 15 rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse the agitating workers, said Badrul Alam Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station.Later, the clash spread to Nishchintapur, Ghoshbag, Shimultola and Narasinghapur.
A large number of police and Rapid Action Battalion members surrounded the factories since morning fearing vandalism.
Most of the factories in Ashulia kept their production suspended for the last six days as the workers were demonstrating since Monday demanding pay hike.
