At least 121 workers of a readymade garment factory at Zamgora in Ashulia industrial belt, on the outskirts of the capital, were terminated on Wednesday amid workers demonstration demanding wage hike.
Witnesses said the authorities of Windy Group garment factory hanged a notice at the factory gate with a list of 121 workers declaring their termination.
The agitating workers took to the street blocking Dhaka-Tangail Highway in Nischintapur area after realising their termination notice this morning.
Being informed, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Dhaka industrial police director Mostafizur Rahman.
A total of 59 factories were shut for unidentified period relating to the persistent workers’ unrest, he said.
Meanwhile, 15 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh along with a large number of Rapid Action Battalion and other law enforcement agencies were deployed around the area since morning.
BGB public relation officer Mohsin Reza said 15 platoons of BGB were deployed at Ashulia this morning.
At least 1, 50,000 workers of several factories had been demonstrating since December 11 demanding for minimum wage of Tk 16,000.
