The metro sessions’ judge’s court in Dhaka on Monday issued arrest warrants for 33 Bangladesh Nationalist Party men in an arson case in the city’s Mirpur area on January 25, United News of Bangladesh reports.
The judge, Kamrul Hossain Mollah, issued the order after taking cognizance of the charge sheet brought against 36 leaders and activists of the BNP-led alliance in the case which was filed under the Special Powers Act 1974 and the Explosive Substance Act 1908.
The accused against whom the warrants were issued included BNP standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Mia, joint secretary general Amanullah Aman, and the BNP chairperson’s special secretary Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas.
The court issued the arrest warrants against 33 BNP men out of 36 charge sheeted accused as they did not appear before the court during the hearing on the case.
The court also asked police to submit within August 3 a report about the steps taken to arrest the 33 accused.
Mirpur police sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam, also the investigation officer of the case, had submitted charge sheet against 36 leaders and activists of BNP-led alliance on March 19.
On January 25, during countrywide blockade and hartal the BNP leaders and activists allegedly hurled a fire bomb at a bus in front of the Sony Cinema Hall at Mirpur section-1.
Khandaker Rajib Ahmed, assistant sub-inspector of Mirpur police station, had filed a case in this connection.
