A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Thursday issued a warrant for aresting Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia in a case filed against her for celebrating her birthday on August 15.
Metropolitan magistrate Mazharul Islam also asked police to report the execution of the warrant to the court by March 2, 2017.
Taking cognisance of the case, the same court on on August 31 summoned Khaleda, also former prime minister, to appear before the court on October 17.
Khaleda was, however, yet to appear before the court in the case, the prosecution argued.
Dhaka Union of Journalists former joint secretary Gazi Jahirul Islam filed the case with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on August 30 stating that the BNP chairperson had been celebrating her her ‘fake’ birthday since August 15, 1996 ‘intentionally’.
By celebrating her birthday on August 15, she has been maligning the day ‘National Mourning Day’ that marked the assassination of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all but two of his family, the complaint said.
Reports had been published in two national dailies on August 22, 1997, and August 27, 1997, over the authenticity of the birthday of Khaleda Zia, stated the complaint.
According to the reports, the date of birth of Khaleda was September 5, 1946, going by her mark for Secondary School Certificate exminations.
A biography was published in another daily while Khaleda was in power in 1991 in which her date of birth was mentioned as August 19, 1945.
During her marriage settlement, the date of birth was August 9, 1944, it said, the complaint stated.
According to her machine readable passport issued in 2011, the date of birth was August 15, 1946, the complaint added.
Khaleda’s counsels Sanaullah Miah said Khaleda was facing 37 cases.
