Army ready to get deployed: CEC

Dhaka, Dec 12 (UNB) – Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Thursday said the army is ready to get deployed during 10th parliament elections slated for January 5.

“We’ve already kept the army alerted. They’re ready to get deployed,” he said while talking to reporters before leaving his office in the evening.

Kazi Rakibuddin, however, said they will hold a meeting soon to finalise when and where the army will be deployed.

The armed forces may be fielded in the country’s some remote areas one or two days before the countrywide deployment as the commission did in the previous general elections, he added.

The Election Commission (EC) will hold the meeting on law and order situation on December 19. Top officials and representatives from the law enforcing agencies and the armed forces as well as the returning officers will attend the meeting, EC secretariat sources said.

Replying to a query about Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad’s request not for allocating his party election symbol ‘plough’ to any candidate, the CEC said the returning officers will take decision in this regard in line with the Representation of the People Order (RPO) as they are representatives of the Election Commission.

“There’re clear provisions in the RPO in this regard. Our returning officers will take steps in this matter… everything will be done following the laws. The returning officers are our representative. They’ll exercise the provisions,” the EC boss said.

The matter will be clear to all after Friday, the last date for withdrawal of candidature, he added.

Rakibuddin said allocation of election symbols among candidates is the job of the returning officers who will interpret the legal provisions in this respect as they have given the copy of RPO and EC’s notifications.

Responding to another query, he hoped that ongoing violence will come down very soon and the law and order situation will improve.

On November 25, the CEC announced the schedule for the general election fixing the voting date for January 5 amid BNP’s boycott threat.
