Apparel workers took to the street and halted traffic movement for nearly an hour in the capital’s Mirpur on Saturday morning demanding their wages. The workers of Padma Sweater Limited staged the demonstration at Mirpur Section 1. Some workers from other factories also joined in the protests. The police rushed the spot and fired a dozen of tear gas shells to control the situation. The protesting workers said that the management of the factory did not pay their monthly wages for the last three months and they had been observing work abstention since November 13. The authority of the factory promised them that the payment would be made by Saturday, but they declined to pay and the agitated workers took to the street. Mirpur police assistant commissioner Sakhawat Hossain said that they cleaned the road by half an hour avoiding any unwanted incident. He said that the police were in search of the factory owner and his associates, but they went into hiding. The police said that they picked up two staff of the Padma factory.
