Defending the government’s stance on the arrest of Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Bangla daily Amar Desh, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said on Tuesday that the newspaper has been used as a tool of propaganda.
“Amar Desh has become a third-class leaflet as it did not follow the basics of journalism,” the minister said at a briefing at the Press Information Department (PID) in the afternoon.
Talking on Rahman’s arrest, Inu said he was arrested under Information and Communication Technology Act, 2006 “for his criminal offence”.
There is no connection of the newspaper’s declaration with it, the minister insisted.
Equipment from the daily’s office were seized under Rule 80 of the law, Inu added.
On publication of the newspaper, the minister said the government would allow the daily to publish from any other press if the authorities apply to the government for so.
