The government statistics released recently showed an increase in Aman production by some 99,000 tonnes in the current fiscal year.
Aman output in the Fiscal Year 2012-13 was marked at 12.897 million tonnes. It was nearly 0.78 per cent higher than that of the previous fiscal, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
“Aman production, the share of which is 38 per cent in the country’s staple rice market, has shown an increase because of higher acreage”, an official said.
Overall production of last year was 33.8 million tonnes, thus farmers have to grow 18.8 million tonnes of rice in current Boro season to reach previous year’s total.
The Aman output could not reduce the price of paddy, rather it has increased significantly in recent times as per maund of seasonal paddy was sold at Tk 700-720 (guti shwarna) and Tk 800-850 (finer shwarna), mokam (local market of raw agricultural produce), sources said.
Compared to last month’ s price, it turned 30-35 per cent higher.
Rice price also surged followed by the paddy price and increased by Tk 3-8 per kg of different varieties. Market experts said rice would remain dearer in coming months if Boro production witnesses a reduction.
Rice, the largest produced staple crop in the country, is cultivated in three seasons. The three forms of rice- Aus, Aman and Boro -contribute 7 per cent, 38 per cent and 55 per cent respectively to total rice output, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
