Aman gets bail in Shibir man killing case

HC bench refuses to hear Gayeshwar’s bail petition

The High Court on Sunday granted six months’ bail to BNP leader Amanullah Aman in a case filed in connection with the killing of an Islami Chhatra Shibir man in the capital last year.

An HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order following a petition by the BNP leader seeking bail in the case.

However, the same bench refused to hear the bail petition of BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in the case.

Gayeshwar’s lawyer M Sagir Hossain Lion said junior judge of the bench Justice Zafar Ahmed felt embarrassed during the hearing on the bail petition.

The lawyer, however, did not mention the reasons why the Judge felt embarrassed.

As the bench returned the petition, he said, they now can move the petition before any other HC benches.

Earlier, on April 20, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Harun ur Rashid sent Aman and Gayeshwar to jail after rejecting their bail petitions in the case.

The court, however, granted bail to another accused, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas.

Following the lower court order, Aman and Gayeshwar appealed to the High Court seeking bail.

The case was filed with Rampura Police Station on December 30 accusing three BNP leaders – its standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, joint secretary general Amanullah Aman — and some unknown people of killing Shibir activist Mansur Pradhania.

Mansur, 20, also a law student at City University in the capital’s Banani area, was killed during a clash between police and the then 18-party alliance activists during their ‘March for Democracy’ programme in the city’s Malibagh area on December 29 last year.
