The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has claimed the Awami League would not have won more than 10 chairman positions had it not ‘used the administration’ during the Upazila polls.
Party’s Standing Committee member ASM Hannan Shah on Thursday said that the lead gained by his party and allies at the local government election was a proof of government’s alienation from the people.
BNP has bagged chairman posts in 56 of the 97 Upazilas in which votes were held on Wednesday, while the ruling party captured only 33.
The legal requirement for a non-partisan local government polls has been ignored by all parties by openly fielding their candidates though each candidate has their own election symbol.

“Yesterday (Wednesday) the first phase of Upazila polls were held. The grassroots people gave their mandate against the government through the polls,” Hannan Shah said.
“If they had not used muscle power and the administration, they would not have won in more than 10-12 Upazilas,” he said.
“They assumed power through a voter-less election and started saying that BNP has no popular support. The Upazila elections have showed that it’s the government that has no popular support.”
“They’re talking about banning Jamaat. They’re saying Jamaat has become disengaged with the people. Look who’s disconnected now,” he said.
The senior BNP leader said the party’s Dhaka metropolitan committee would be restructured to start a strong resistance movement against the government.
“We saw all our grassroots activists actively taking part in the movement against the Jan 5 polls. But Dhaka metropolitan activists were conspicuously absent,” he stated.
Other senior BNP leaders also spoke at the event held at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

TO MR OBAIDUL KADIR
Why not recite the ritual ” THE WAR CRIMINALS & THOSE WHO WANT TO SAVE THEM ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE IGNOMINIOUS , SHAMEFUL DEFEAT A.L & ITS ATHEIST ALLIES SUFFERED IN THE LOCAL ELECTION? You have insulted us the millions of Bengali & Sylheti Muslims saying “WE WERE JAMAATIS, WAR CRIMINALS, ENEMIES OF THE STATE….. “ because we opposed your judicial killings and de-Islamization of our country. If you do not restore the sentence Hasina deleted from our constitution on Sengupta & Indian order we will make sure that you pay a political price for that BIGGEST SIN/CRIME. We say once again, it is still time to restore the sentence. You know why Muslim Sylhet joined you Bengali Muslims in 1947. Remember that and please do not abuse & insult people who speak for Islam
