Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said that the Awami League was responsible for all the military regimes the country has experienced till date and the BNP never favoured military rule.
Addressing a discussion at the National Press Club, Fakhrul rejected the prime minister’s allegation that BNP had boycotted the January 5 election to bring military rule. ‘Her statement is nothing but attempt to deceive the people and make them fools’.
It is totally false that Ziaur Rahman had brought military rule, claimed Fakhrul. ‘It was Awami League leader Khondker Mostaque Ahmed who imposed military rule, not Zia.’
He said Awami League president Sheikh Hasina had commented that she was not unhappy when HM Ershad usurped power overthrowing an elected government.
The BNP leader claimed the party’s movement was successful saying that the January 5 election was not acceptable to home and abroad.
Fakhrul said democracy and development were not possible if fascist government of Awami League was not removed.
He however said democratic movement of unarmed people against Awami fascist force could take some time but people would definitely win.
Bangladesh Democratic Forum organised the discussion presided by its president, HM Harisul Huq while addressed among others by Islami Oikya Jote chairman Abdul Latif Nezami and BNP publicity secretary Zainul Abdin Farroque.
