The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Tuesday said the ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) must relinquish power before the next general elections.
Talking to reporters in Lalmonirhat, the BNP leader said the party is ready to take part in the general elections anytime.
“Because the BNP is an election-oriented party, but the Awami League will have to step down during the election and the election must be held under a competent election commission,” he noted.
Referring to the recent attacks on the minority communities, Fakhrul said the ruling AL never believes in communal harmony and non-communalism.
“They speak of communal harmony. But it’s a mockery. In no way they believe in non-communalism. Awami League leaders were involved in most of the incidents of attack on minorities the country has witnessed.”
Fakhrul alleged that ruling AL leaders and activists were involved in the attack on Santal people in Gaibandha.
In response to a question, the BNP secretary general said the party will discuss in its forum whether it will join ensuing elections in district council and Narayanganj city corporation.
“You [newsmen] have seen how they [AL] have held the elections. So, joining election and boycotting elections are the same. This election commission is inept and subservient to the government.”
He alleged that the AL always wanted to cling to the state power by holding one-sided election.
