BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said that the government should create the atmosphere for holding dialogue with the opposition if it really wanted to resolve the political crisis.
Speaking at a protest meeting in the city, he said that there was a big gap between what the government was saying and what it was doing.
He said that the government was killing and arresting opposition leaders and activists only to throttle the voice of the opposition.
Fakhrul said ruling Awami League is politically bankrupt.
He said that this government’s dream of throttling the voice of opposition would be frustrated.
The city’s Senbagh Jatiyatabadi Forum organized the meeting at National Press Club to press the demand for setting the BNP leaders recently arrested from the party’s central office free.
Awami League believes in fascism and not democracy, he said.
He said that that the government pushed the country on the path of dangerous political confrontation.
He urged the government to create atmosphere for holding dialogue to resolve the political crisis.
Fakhrul said the opposition was for peaceful hartal on March 18 and 19 following the path of constitutional politics.
But it’s the government which obstructs all peaceful opposition programmes.
He criticized ruling Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam for which remarks and said that it showed that the government was intimidating the opposition.
He said that the government was trying to use war crimes trials as a shield to cover up its monumental misdeeds and to divert people’s attention from its failure to implement the pledges it made to them in the last election.
He said that the people wanted to get rid of this government’s misrule.
He said that this government had lost the moral right to continue in power.
Fakhrul said that the people would bring down the anti-people regime through a united movement.
He called upon the people to get united under the leadership of Khaleda Zia to get rid of this anti-people government.
Chaired by president of the organisation Harun-or-Rashid, BNP central leaders Barkatullah Bulu, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie and others spoke at the meeting.
