A street is being named after Bangladesh’s late president Ziaur Rahman in Chicago, USA. A sign bearing the name ‘Ziaur Rahman Way’ is to be unveiled tomorrow, Sunday.
Leaders and supporters of BNP in the US are gathering in Chicago on the occasion. City mayor Rahm Emmanuel is also to attend the programme.
In the meantime, local BNP and Awami League leaders and activists are at loggerheads over the naming of this road.
Awami League has called for demonstrations and protests in Chicago against the road being named after Ziaur Rahman. A demonstration was scheduled for yesterday, Friday, and AL leaders and workers came to Chicago to join the protest.
Awami League leaders Kazi Kayes and Shaheen Ajmal tell Prothom Alo, “There is already a road named after Bangabandhu in the city. This initiative to name another one after Ziaur Rahman is just dirty politics.”
Another local AL leader says that a lot of money and lobbying went into influencing the city council for this purpose.
Local BNP leader Mosaddeq Mintu says that all out efforts are being made to hold a grand ceremony for the unveiling of the street name.
