File PhotoBNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said Awami League has long been carrying out attacks on the leaders and activists of the BNP and Oikya Front across the country sensing its debacle in a fair election, reports UNB.
“They (AL) have realised they’ll face a miserable defeat if the election is held in a credible manner. That’s why they’ve attacked Dr Kamal Hossain, me and our leaders and activists all over the country,” he said.
The BNP leader, however, said they will not quit the election race under any circumstance.
Fakhrul made the remarks while addressing a Bangladesh Nationalist Party workers’ meeting at Shaheed Titu auditorium in Bogura.
He strongly condemned and protested the attack on Jatiya Oikya front chief Kamal Hossain, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rab and other alliance leaders at the main gate of Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur in the capital.
Earlier in the day, some people, said to be supporters of local Awami League candidate Aslamul Haque, attacked the vehicles carrying Kamal Hossain, ASM Abdur Rab and Jaglul Haider Afrik with sticks, leaving at least 10 people injured.
Fakhrul, also a BNP candidate for Bogura-6 constituency, urged the party leaders and activists to work harder for ensuring the victory of ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ – election sysmbol of the BNP — by convincing voters to go to polling stations and cast their votes.
“You’ll not only cast your votes, but also guard every polling station all day long on 30 December so that no one can rig votes. Don’t return home without taking the results. Our victory will be ensured if we can protect people’s votes,” he directed the BNP leaders and workers.
At the beginning of his address, Fakhrul said he is not a candidate for Bogura-6 seat, but a representative of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and its acting chairman Tarique Rahman. “So, work unitedly putting aside all the misunderstanding among you to ensure the party’s victory.”
Fakhrul is scheduled to conduct electioneering in the town and address several election rallies in the afternoon.
