AL announces names of upazila chairman candidates
The ruling Awami League has announced the names of chairman candidates of the first-phase upazila elections to be held on 10 March on party tickets, reports UNB.
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader revealed the names of the chairman candidates at a press briefing held at Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi on Saturday.
Earlier on Friday, a joint meeting of Awami League parliamentary board and its local government nomination board finalised the names at a meeting with party president prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On 4 February, Awami League started the sale of nomination papers to those who want to contest the first-phase upazila elections.
According to the Election Commission, elections to 87 upazila parishads will be held on 10 March in the first phase.
The last date for submitting nomination papers is 11 February while that of withdrawal is 19 February.
Earlier, the Commission said the fifth upazila parishad elections will be held in five phases from March.
According to electoral law, election to any upazila council has to take place at least six months before the tenure of the local government body expires.
