AC explosion kills one at Gulshan hotel

A man has been killed and two others have sustained severe burns when an air conditioner exploded during the repairing work on rooftop of a luxurious hotel in the capital’s Gulshan area on Friday.

The deceased is Anowar, 35, a technician of Watson Group.

Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gulshan police station, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The explosion occurred on the rooftop of Six Seasons Hotel in Gulshan-1 area around 3pm, leaving a technician dead on the spot and two others injured.”

“The injured, Sohel Rana, 30, and hotel Staff Kartik, 40, were rushed to the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Sohel received 62% burns while Kartik got 45% burns.”

Kartik told the Dhaka Tribune: “I have found glitch in the air conditioning system of the building and informed the authorities. Later, the two technicians of Watson Group were repairing the glitch and I was monitoring their works. Suddenly the explosion occurred, leaving Anowar dead on the spot.”

Partha Sankar Pal, residential surgeon of DMCH Burn Unit, said the condition of Sohel Rana was critical and both the injured were under observation.

The fire did not affect the hotel building, said an official of the hotel.
