Abdul Jalil passes away

front03M Abdul Jalil, Advisory Council member of  Awami League (AL) and former general secretary of the party died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on Wednesday at the age of 72.
Abdul Jalil, also Chairman of Mercantile Bank Ltd was admitted to the hospital on February 27 with Myocardial Infraction (MI). Abdul Jalil was kept under life-support as his health conditions deteriorated after operation at the hospital.
He left behind wife, two sons and two daughters and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.
Abdul Jalil served AL as its general secretary from December 2002 to July 2009 who also served the country as commerce minister during the last AL government tenure. He also played the leading  role in a dialogue with BNP Secretary general Abdul Mannan in resolving a political  crisis of 2006. However, their initiatives failed to resolve the crisis.
President M Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in separate messages, deeply condoled the demise of valiant freedom fighter and senior Awami League leader Abdul Jalil. Besides, speaker Abdul Hamid Advocate, Deputy Speaker Colonel (retd) Shawkat Ali, Chief Whip Vice Principal Abdus Shaheed, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain and Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan also condoled the death of Jalil.
Born on January 21, 1939 in a Muslim family in Naogaon, Jalil was the only son of a businessman late Fayez Uddin Ahmed. Jalil passed secondary school certificate (SSC) in 1957 from KD School. He obtained BA (honours) and MA degree from Dhaka University in 1963 and 1964 respectively.
In his condolence message, President Zillur Rahman said the nation has lost a dedicated and senior politician in the death of Abdul Jalil. President Rahman said the nation will recall Abdul Jalil with due respect for his outstanding contribution in the country’s War of Liberation.
“His (Jalil) role in democratic movements in the post- liberation period is also highly significant,” he said. The President prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his deep sympathy to members of the bereaved family.

In her message of condolence, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the nation has lost a patriotic, dedicated and popular politician in his death. Abdul Jalil was one the close associates of Bangabandhu and organizers of the War of Liberation, she said.
The Prime Minister recalled the contribution of Abdul Jalil in all democratic movements and making the democracy sustainable. His death is an irreparable loss for the nation, she added.
The Prime Minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
A host of cabinet members also condoled the death of Awami League (AL) Advisory Council member and former general secretary M Abdul Jalil.
In separate condolence messages, they expressed deep shock at the demise of Jalil, former commerce minister of the last Awami League government tenure and one of the organizers of the Liberation War in 1971.
The cabinet members and political leaders also issued separate statements to express their deep shock at the death of Abdul Jalil. They also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
