Mobile phone services around BNP’s Gulshan office have been suspended.
Requesting anonymity, a senior executive of a leading mobile operator told Dhaka Tribune that 60 Base Transceiver Stations around the BNP chief’s office, where she has remained “confined” since Jan 3, have been made inactive.
Measure comes on Saturday morning hours after electricity supply to Khaleda Zia’s office on Road 86 in Gulshan was suspended past Friday midnight.
The executive said the telecom regulator (Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission) had made the request at first verbally.
But the operators did not pay heed ‘as the area is adjacent to the diplomatic zone and thousands of our customers will suffer’ said the executive. “Later, they issued a written order.”
The letter ordered stopping all types of voice and data services in areas around the BNP office until further notice.
“But, the services cannot be suspended completely since those with satellite facilities and wifi networks, can access internet and other voice and data services,” the executive explained.
The base stations include 20 of Grameenphone, 15 of Robi and 18 of Banglalink.
