A High Court Bench on Thursday rejected a writ petition filed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khalada Zia who challenged the legitimacy of appointment of a justice and postponement of the proceedings of Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases.
After two days of hearing on the petition Justice Kazi Reza-ul-Haque passed the order.
Earlier on May 25 a High Court double bench delivered split verdict after hearing Khaleda Zia’s petition. Senior Justice of the bench Farah Mahbub postponed the proceedings of the cases for three months and issued a rule while Justice Kazi Md Izaharul Akanda rejected the plea.
It was known that after the split verdict the cases were sent to the Chief Justice Md Mozammel Hossain who formed a single HC bench for clearing off the writ petition.
The case was sent to Justice Kazi Reza-ul-Haque’s bench on last Sunday.
A Dhaka court framed charges against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman and seven others in two corruption cases.
The HC on April 23 rejected two revision petitions filed by Khaleda Zia challenging the charge framing orders against her in two graft cases.
Later the government decided to hold the trial of Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust corruption cases at the Alia Madrassa ground in Dhaka’s Bakshi Bazar.
On May 12 Khaleda Zia again challenged her indictment in two corruption cases. She filed two separate writ petitions with the High Court, challenging the legality of appointment of the trial court judge, who indicted her in Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases, and the order against her in the cases.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed Zia Orphanage Trust Case with the Ramna police on July 3, 2008 on charge of embezzling over Tk 2.10 crore by forming the “fake” trust during the 1991-1996 tenure of the BNP-led government.
On August 8 in 2011 ACC filed another case, Zia Charitable Trust Graft Case, with the Tejgaon police against Khaleda Zia and three others for abusing power in setting up the charity named after the late president Ziaur Rahman when Khaleda was prime minister between 2001 and 2006.
