BNP staged demonstrations across the country on Sunday in protest against police action foiling its scheduled rally at the Engineers’ Institute in the city on Thursday.
The party leaders and activists brought out processions in all the cities, including Dhaka, district towns and upazila headquarters throughout the country to register their protest against the police action.
As part of the countrywide programmes, different thana BNP units brought out processions in the capital city, according to a Dhaka city unit BNP press release.
The party in the press release alleged that their at least 18 leaders and activists were injured as police attacked their processions in Mirpur and Shahbagh areas of the city.
It also claimed that police arrested their eight activists.
On Friday, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Dhaka City BNP was to arrange the rally at the Engineers’ Institute in protest against the rising incidents of killing, force disappearance and abduction across the country.
But, police locked the main gate of the Engineers’ Institute’s auditorium hours before the beginning of the rally saying that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) did not give permission for the programme.
