BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas on Sunday asked his party men to get ready for breaking open the country’s jails to free their arrested leaders.

“There’s no point of shouting slogans …we must prepare for unlocking the jails to free our leaders,” he told a protest meeting.

Abbas further said: “Today’s programme is not only a protest rally. It’s rather part of our preparation for a movement.  The entire country has been made a jail. We’ve to free the whole nation from this prison through a strong movement.”

The Dhaka south unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, protesting the indictment of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.

Mentioning that the jail authorities had to release student leader Mostafa Mohsin Montu during the 90’s anti-autocratic movement in the face of strong agitations, Abbas said, “That was the real spirit …that was the real drive to free leaders by breaking open a jail.”

Abbas harshly criticised the current government for what he said its repressive acts, “The way the fascist Awami League has resorted to killing, forced disappearance and repression it outshined the autocratic regimes of Hitler and Mussolini. “

He alleged that the government by grabbing power is now sacrificing the country’s interest to foreigners only to protect an individual’s interest.

Abbas accused the government of having failed to realise Bangladesh’s due share of water of the Teesta River from Bangladesh due to its submissive policy.
