Environment and Forests Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday said opposition activists have chopped down about forty thousand trees across the country in the name of blockade damaging national property worth hundreds of cores of Taka.
“BNP-Jamaat have announced war not only against human beings but also nature. About 40,000 trees worth hundreds of crores of Taka have been felled across the country during the so called blockade,” he said.
The minister made the remark while talking to reporters at his secretariat office after a meeting with Australian High Commissioner in Dhaka Greg Wilcock.
Replying to query, Dr Hasan said the Australian envoy termed ‘positive’ the Prime Minister’s announcement of dissolving parliament on reaching compromise with the opposition following the January 5 polls.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, addressing a joint meeting of Awami League Election Steering Committee on Thursday, said, “If there’s any compromise (with the opposition), we’ll dissolve Parliament, if necessary, for holding the election again. But, she (Khaleda Zia) has to stop killing and blockade, she has to leave the company of Jamaat for any dialogue.”
