Efforts on to ensure EU election observers presence

5-member BD delegation likely to leave for Brussels Tuesday night

As the European Union (EU) still remains undecided over sending observers to monitor the next national elections, the government has reportedly taken an initiative so that the EU finally sends observers to monitor the polls billed for January 5.

As part of the initiative, a five-member delegation led by former adviser to the Prime Minister HT Imam is likely to leave Dhaka for Brussels on Tuesday night, diplomatic sources said.

The main opposition BNP has already decided to boycott the polls under this government fearing vote fraud.

Meanwhile, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission Catherine Ashton on Sunday said the EU is ready to consider sending election observers as it did in 2008. “However, this depends on the political and security situation in Bangladesh.”

Catherine Ashton is likely to visit Bangladesh next week to discuss polls issues with the political leaders and the election commission, sources said.

  1. The adamantine and insolence with which our dear PM has been treating the international bodies has, perhaps, left little chance for creating a healthy atmosphere congenial to conduct a free, fair, credible and inclusive election. We are shocked to observe how one persons worse than autocratic whims can bring about immense damage to both the country and its people. It’s also very surprising how matured politicians could submit to their boss burying deep their conscience and common sense. This is very, very unfortunate for a nation that had to sacrifice an ocean of blood and tears to become independent. Woe with us!
