A Bangladesh national had committed suicide in a US prison.
Maharram Ali, 21, son of Abul Hossain of Barabaria village in Natore’s Lalpur upazila, was serving a three-year sentence in a prison at Pennsylvania’s Philadelphia on charges of theft.
He committed suicide on September 4 in his cell. The death certificate said Maharram hanged himself.
‘North Bengal Foundation’ founder Hasanuzzaman Hasan said that Maharram was jailed last year for snatching money from the manager of a Philadelphia restaurant where he worked.
The expatriate Bangladeshis suspect foul play and have demanded a high-level inquiry over the matter.
Zainal Abedin, who currently lives in Philadelphia, said Maharram came to the US in June 2011 winning a Diversity Visa (DV) in lottery.
‘He came to my house at first. I was the one who managed the job for him as a salesman at the Dunking Donut restaurant. He was arrested for stealing in that restaurant.’
The police informed Abedin of the suicide as they found his address in Maharram’s pocket.
Maharram’s family has been informed of his death, Abedin said.
Hasanuzzaman said the dead body was kept at the Philadelphia morgue.
At least $10,000 would be needed to send his body back home.
He sought financial aid from the Bangladesh embassy and wealthy expatriates to help sending Maharram’s remains back to his family.
