Activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir allegedly have torched a police microbus and a motorcycle in the capital’s Paltan area, hours after a Dhaka tribunal set Monday for delivering its judgement in a war trial case against Jamaat-e-Islami former chief Ghulam Azam.
Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Paltan Police Station, also sustained injuries at his head during the incident, Mehedi Hassan, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Motijheel Division, confirmed this to The Daily Star.
The injured police official was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, the ADC added.
A group of men suddenly set fire to the microbus at Paltan intersection around 2:15pm, said officials of Fire Service and Civil Defence.
In the face of sudden attack, the policemen inside the microbus ran for safety.
Moments later, the group also intercepted the OC riding on a motorcycle and beat him.
On information, a unit from the fire service headquarters rushed to the spot and doused the fire.
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Sunday fixed July 15 for delivering its verdict in a case filed for committing crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
Azam, now 91 years old, was indicted on five charges, which include involvement in murder and torture of unarmed people, conspiracy, planning, incitement and complicity to commit genocide and crimes against humanity during the war.
