Dissatisfied over sending top opposition leaders to jail turning down their bail petitions, BNP joint secretary general Salauddin Ahmed on Sunday said the country is now facing judicial terrorism.
“Our top leaders prayed for bails appearing before the court. They were denied bail. It has proved the country is now facing judicial terrorism,” he told a press conference at the BNP Nayapaltan central office in the capital.
Accusing the government of politicising the judiciary, the BNP leader said the government is severely oppressing the opposition leaders and activists through using the state machinery.
Describing the government repressive acts against the opposition, he said “The government has made the opposition the ‘target of oppression’. The control of all departments has gone to the hands of a single person, taking anarchy to an extreme level. They (govt) have turned the country into a police state.”
To get rid of this situation, the bureaucrat-turned politician called upon the country’s people to get involved in the anti-government tougher movement.
Earlier in the day, three Dhaka courts sent 10 senior BNP leaders, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, to jail in seven cases filed over the March 1 violence in the city.
The BNP leaders also include Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Abdullah Al Noman, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Amanullah Aman, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Barkat Ullah Bulu and Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie and Moazzem Hossain Alal.
Of them, Rizvi and Aman are already in jail.
BNP assistant office secretary Abdul Latif Jony, its central executive committee member Belal Ahmed, Rafique Shikder and Mahila Dal general secretary Shirin Sultana were, among others, present.
