BNP on Wednesday postponed its Thursday’s dawn-to-dusk hartal, which was supposed to be enforced in Dhaka district, following President Zillur Rahman’s death.

Abdul Mannan, president of the main opposition’s district unit, announced the decision at a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Wednesday night.

He said they decided to postpone the hartal showing respect to the late President.

The BNP leader, however, said they would announce the hartal programme afresh at a convenient time.

The district BNP called the shutdown in five upazilas of Dhaka district — Dohar, Nawabganj, Keraniganj, Savar and Dhamrai — demanding the release of its leaders, including unit general secretary Amanullah Aman.

Police raided the BNP Nayapaltan central office on March 11 and arrested over 150 leaders and activists of the party, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, vice-chairmen Sadeque Hossain Khoka and Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farroque and BNP joint secretaries general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Amanullah Aman.

Three of the leaders — Fakhrul, Khoka and Altaf — were, however, released the following day.
